Taxonomy
A system for naming things and organizing them into groups based on their similarities.
Originally rooted in scientific disciplines like biology, taxonomy has become a practical concept in data management — particularly within Data Management Platforms (DMPs).
In a DMP context, taxonomy refers to establishing a single, consistent naming convention across related data sources. Because different systems often use different terms to describe the same concept — for instance, one platform might refer to a "user" while another calls that same entity a "visitor" — a DMP taxonomy reconciles these inconsistencies by standardizing all references under one agreed-upon term. This unification makes data from disparate sources comparable and usable at scale.
